About Us

Welcome to Friends of Squirrel Lake, a newly recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization! Founded by a group of individuals with deep roots in the Squirrel Lake community and a shared love for the lake, Friends of Squirrel Lake is dedicated to bringing people together, protecting our natural resources, promoting lake and community safety, and creating opportunities for neighbors to connect. Through educational programs, community events, lake stewardship initiatives, and charitable projects, we hope to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the place we all love.

Our organization is built on the belief that when a community comes together, great things happen. Whether you've called Squirrel Lake home for generations or are just beginning to make memories here, we invite you to be part of something special. Together, we can preserve what makes Squirrel Lake so special while building an even stronger community for generations to come.

What We Do

Rooted in a collaborative approach between local stakeholders and expert partners, Friends of Squirrel Lake focuses on the conservation, stewardship, and management of the fishery and ecosystem of Squirrel Lake in Oneida County, Wisconsin. The organization serves as an information hub and stewardship network dedicated to:

Fishery Management

Monitoring and supporting key sport and native fish populations, including walleye, muskellunge, and bass, through initiatives like DNR fish surveys, habitat enhancement, and upcoming regulatory efforts.

Lake Management

Safeguarding water quality, tracking aquatic plants, monitoring invasive species, and preserving natural shorelines.

Community & Science Partnerships

Working hand-in-hand with key authorities such as the Wisconsin DNR (including Oneida County Fisheries Biologist Nathan J. Lederman) and the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC biologist Brandon Byrne).

Education & Transparency

Providing anglers, residents, and nature enthusiasts with accessible data, live environmental monitoring (such as real-time water temperature tracking), historical stocking records, reports, and a vibrant community gallery.
